Painted in 1989, this image, featuring Treebeard from JRR Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings with the hobbits Merry and Pippin in Fangorn Forest, was Matthews' contribution to the book The Tree. Royalties from this project went to The Woodland Trust. The original was sold at the book launch at The Chris Beetles Gallery, London.
