DESCRIPTION
'Sleepwalking' is the cover art for the ninth studio album by the British band Magnum. In true Magnum tradition, Tony Clarkin sketched out the essence of what he wanted for the album cover, and in true Matthews tradition he made a few additions. The mirror shows Tony shaven-headed as he is now and beside it is a wig to remind people of how he used to look. The suggestion that he ever did wear a wig is purely Matthews' own little joke. Other Matthews inclusions are the jets from 'The Eleventh Hour', the bag and stick from 'On A Storyteller's Night', certain book titles, the Lord's Prayer scroll, Birmingham City football socks and the nose boil ointment as used by Bob Catley when the cover was being discussed - sorry Bob!
Matthews remembers that this illustration took twenty-six days to complete, and, whilst not typical of his style of illustration, it was a challenge he enjoyed. He also enjoyed several trips to the Magnum studio, where he was able to hear some of the tracks being laid down.

I’ve always admired the album covers that Rodney has been involved with. On first opening I was wowed by the vibrant colours and quality of Rodney’s artwork. The detail in this print is amazing. It’s now framed and takes pride of place in my living room. I love it. Magnum have always been a special band for me and to now have a piece of their history from a special time in my life hanging on my wall is fantastic. If you’ve ever wondered is it really worth buying one the answer is quite categorically “Hell Yeah!”. The service and care you receive from Rodney and Sarah is second to none. Thank you.
This is one of my favourite artworks by Rodney, created for my favourite band, Magnum for their 1992 release 'Sleepwalking'. I would go so far as to say, I would (almost) put it up there with 'On a Storytellers Night' artwork, due to the sense of mystery and charm it evokes. It also happens to be in my top 5 Magnum albums so as with ‘On a Storytellers nIght’, it is the full package. Look anywhere in the image and the detail is incredible, in particular those relating to Magnum and their other albums, which is done so brilliantly. And of special note - the dual nature of America (as the band came to know) is characterised so well with the smiling/menacing Jack-in-the-box. What an album and what an artwork - Perfection.
