DESCRIPTION

This image was inspired by Isambard Kingdom Brunel's suspension bridge in Clifton, Bristol.  Many years ago Matthews had a studio overlooking the bridge and often walked his late dog Patch under and over it!  At the time he sketched his fantasy version of the bridge and stashed it in his ideas file for use at a later date.  It was finally retrieved in 1980 when Matthews was commissioned by Jet Records (owned by Sharon Osbourne's father) to design his first Magnum album.  He was given the album's title - 'The Spirit' - by Tony Clarkin.  On that basis he produced pencil sketches for a vinyl album front cover and an inside spread, both featuring the same eternal city (or palace).  The palace sits in a red desert on the front cover, representing the eternal irrepressible spirit.  The inside spread - 'Sanctuary' - shows the same palace, still in place, despite the passing of aeons of time and massive erosion having taken place.  Unfortunately, Jet Records went cheap, so the inside spread was not used!  Ultimately, Tony Clarkin changed the name of the album from 'The Spirit' to 'Chase the Dragon', hence the front cover artwork is also titled 'Chase the Dragon'.
