The Rolling Stones: Painted Black limited edition giclèe art print
In 2016 Coda Publishing licensed Matthews' 1970s artwork 'Another Time, Another Place' for use on a collector's anthology album of live broadcasts by The Rolling Stones in their original line-up. However, there was one adjustment that had to be made to the iconic artwork - Matthews had to remove Ronnie Wood and paint Brian Jones into the scene instead. The resulting piece was titled 'Another Time, Another Place II'. Roll on several months and the company was back in contact to commission not only a prequel image ('Time on Our Side'), but also this sequel ('Painted Black').
'Painted Black' is the conclusion of Matthews' epic tale featuring The Rolling Stones; a going home statement in which the original skeletal black ship, from which they departed, has now returned to take them away. The six-legged mechanical Death's-head is another requisition from their spoils of war. Perhaps, it will be taken aboard? Their departure is quietly observed by the empty eye sockets of an orbiting satellite, in turn orbited by two electrons, suggesting a helium aspect.
