Asia approached Matthews requesting suggestions for an album, which at the time had no title. In the Asia tradition this title had to have an “A” at each end of a single word, so Matthews rummaged through a dictionary and came up with the word “aqua”. Requesting that the image have both a “water” and “spacey” feel, he ensured that most of the subsequent seven drawings included these two elements. When the drawings were ready, Geoff Downes and John Payne visited Matthews' studio to decide on the appropriate image. This was the one they chose.
