Alice in Wonderland and other tales - Art Exhibition
Friday 18th - Monday 21st August 2017 | 10:30am to 5pm | Free Admission
The Victoria Hall, Victoria Street, Bourton-on-the-Water, Gloucestershire, GL54 2BU
'Alice in Wonderland and other tales' is an exhibition of art by world renowned illustrator Rodney Matthews, featuring iconic images from his vast repertoire of interpretations from classic adventure stories by great British authors, including Lewis Carroll, J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Kenneth Grahame, Mervyn Peake and J.M. Barrie.
Join Rodney Matthews himself, at this four-day feast for the eyes and let his sumptuous illustrations take you on a spectacular journey: tumble down the rabbit hole to Alice's nonsensical Wonderland as you have never seen it before; fly happy thoughts deep into the heart of Neverland with Peter Pan; immerse yourself in the grandiose surroundings of Toad Hall; fend off the dragons and orcs of Middle Earth; and so much more.
An array of full colour originals, pencil sketches, fine art prints and souvenir gifts will be on display and available to purchase. Plus, meet and speak with Rodney, who will be in attendance daily, and will be delighted to sign autographs, books, etc.
This delightful exhibition, suitable for adults and children alike, will be held in the Upper Floor Hall (a stairlift is available for the use of disabled and elderly visitors) at The Victoria Hall in Bourton-on-the Water. Regularly voted as one of the prettiest villages in England, picturesque Bourton-on-the-Water, also known as the "Venice of the Cotswolds", has a wealth of attractions, shops, restaurants and tea rooms (perfect for your own Mad Hatter's Tea Party!)
The original painting At the March Hare's Table (shown above) is owned by actor and writer John Cleese. The image has also been released and is available to purchase within a set of four limited edition prints. In 2008, it appeared alongside Matthews' other Alice works, in his own illustrated version of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, published by Templar. Rodney's work and this stunning collectors' classic book, received the following glowing review by Mr Cleese:
"Michelangelo, Manet, Monet, Matisse, Munch, Mondrain, and Matthews. All my favourite artists begin with an 'M'. And so, Rodney Matthews is generally acknowledged to be among the greatest artists that have ever lived. Need I say more? Please buy this book, and all his other works, because then my immense collection of stuff will become even more valuable. Especially when he dies."
