Arena was Matthews' second Asia commission, but this time the title had already been decided and Geoff Downes was able to give him a fairly good idea of what was required – a confrontational scene of positive versus negative, or good versus evil. Matthews did preliminary sketches, but did not feel he hit the target, until this one, chosen by Geoff Downes and John Payne. The layout allowed Matthews to make more of the nuclear symbol and its transformation into a skull. Since the Chernobyl disaster, Matthews has become even more concerned about the tightrope we walk when using nuclear energy.
