Out of an Amber Sky (Vortex)
Vortex magazine came into being in 1977 and ran for about a dozen copies before lack of funding caught up with it. Vortex No. 3 featured Out of an Amber Sky on the cover, printed back to front to accommodate the lettering (as, incidentally, happened with the first cover). Matthews was given a free hand and chose an ancient versus modern theme. The pose of the rider was achieved by taking a few Polaroids of his studio partner, Terry Brace, sitting bare-chested astride a couple of chairs threatening the ceiling light with a long ruler.
